Turning Disabilities to Abilities by Reaching Sensory Needs
My students need a variety of sensory items to access their learning environment to learn skills to be successful in reaching their academic, work, community, and daily living goals.
My students have taught me the simplicity of life. My classroom is a group of high school students with moderate to severe disabilities. The disabilities range from intellectual disabilities, orthopedic disabilities, vision impairments, and Autism. All of my students need extra supports to access their academics and social/adaptive skills. We also have a strong focus on skills that will benefit my students' life after they leave school, for instance, in the areas of work, schooling, life in the community, and daily living skills.
My Project
The variety of sensory materials will provide my students with the opportunity to grow as individuals in the areas of academics, social/adaptive skills, and daily living. The students in my class will be able to decrease their sensory barriers and use that energy to promote positive work ethic to increase their opportunities during life after school.
By donating to my project, my students will be able to learn in a more welcoming and comfortable environment.
My students are eager to learn and enjoy school. My goal is to have their needs met so they can show the world the amazing attributes they have to offer!
My project is to meet the sensory needs of my students so they can access their environment. My vision is to create a more functional space for my students to release sensory output to access information to lead to more independence. This can be through flexible seating (i.e., Anywhere Rocker Chair, Gel-E Seat, Big Joe Bean Bag Chair, Classic Video Rocker), variation of lighting (i. e., light covers, floor lamp), and a variety of sensory fidgets (i.e, putty, pencil grips, stress balls). Along with the requested items, I have been working with students individually to create and identify sensory items that will help encourage positive interactions in their everyday environment and within sensory breaks.
