This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
At our school, our motto is: "Anyone can be good, but AWESOME takes PRACTICE!" We believe with hard-work and determination, every student can be successful. We encourage our students to be problem-solvers and teach them strategies that will enable them to be independent learners.
My third graders are a sweet bunch of students who like to have fun but also know that they have to work hard.
Most of them come from loving and respectful families that work hard to create a better life for the future. They understand that education is important. Unfortunately, most of them do not have access to technology at home. With this in mind, our school has implemented many programs that will help students become proficient at using technology. We have access to iPads and laptops for about 4 hours a week. In order for students to gain more access, I open my classroom to students before and after school to use the computers. They also come in during their recess. The implementation of technology-based math and reading programs has allowed for more differentiated and self-paced learning.
My Project
With the addition of 30 individual headphones during our technology blocks, my students will be able to focus better in a quieter classroom setting. As of now, when it's our computer time, we hear a jumble of texts being read aloud, music from another source, and beeps and dings from our math programs. In a classroom of 24, I sometimes have to ask students to mute their devices so that we can all focus!
I have tried asking students and parents to bring in their own headphones, but only a handful of students have done so.
With these on-ear headphones, I'm hoping they will last a few years. My class will be so excited when they are allowed to turn up the volume on whatever they are working on!
