My Students

Right now there is a line of five fifth graders waiting for a book I mentioned the other day. This is just one example of how enthusiastic my students are about reading. The voracious readers I teach are in grades 1st through 5th. They read well above their grade level and are interested in learning about everything from mythology to current events. They are curious about the world around them and devour the books and articles that answer some of the big questions they often ask.

They love reading plays, creating skits, having debates, and writing about what they have read.

Always looking to share what they have learned with a friend or their teacher, there is often a hum of discussion in small groups, jokes about characters that are carried from year to year, and connections to Harry Potter and other class favorites.

My Project

I am always looking for something to challenge these strong readers and I have found that the Scholastic magazines provide a variety of interesting, yet challenging articles about current events. This project requests subscriptions to Junior Scholastic, Storyworks and Scholastic News.

I have used the magazines in class to spark discussion and debates, practice reading charts and graphs, and work with peers to read plays.

It's important that these high achieving students are able to think critically about issues impacting their future. By providing them with the opportunity to understand and analyze current events allows them to be aware of the world, but also speak out about topics that are important to them.
