Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

You never forget building something on your own. While it seems the newest buzz in STEM education is that students are building electronics and learning programming, the truth is that making stuff with your own two hands has always been the best teacher.

My students are an eager group of kids who also happen to be recent immigrants to the U.S.

They have come to the United States seeking an education that can give them and their families a better life. Our school does not teach English as a separate class. We infuse English throughout the curriculum so students have a reason to learn it as a second or third language. With skills and language, they can graduate high school then succeed in college and careers. No matter what language they speak coming in though, they all speak the common language of science, which is what I teach. They love to solve problems together, but more importantly, they love showing off what they've learned. Building their own electronic circuits and learning how to use computer language to program them are skills that can improve my students' chances of reaching their dreams. Teaching them how to use Arduinos and circuitry, I hope I can unleash a new way for them to be creative and to solve problems.

My Project

So many of the careers we depend on - medicine, agriculture, computers, community planning, and basic research - are experiencing revolutions thanks to computing and programmable microcontroller technology. I will use this kit this year to teach a smaller group of students in my after-school club the basics of this technology, and for myself to learn what works for kids and what doesn't. By next year, I want to use this kit to help extend what we do in our science projects. Why stop at an experiment about how the circulatory system reacts to exercise? Why not build our own basic fitness bands? How about instead of healthy habits questionnaires with pen and paper, students can make electronic survey devices for their classmates to interact with and see the results in real-time? Jewelry that lights up in-time with a person's breathing? The possibilities with this type of technology are endless.

I am always seeking to grow as a teacher because the world my students enter after leaving me is always changing.

Entering my second decade of teaching, my goal is still to teach science-literate citizens. I want teach them how to build their own technology to inspire them to reach that goal. They will always remember how proud they are about what they built, and they will always carry the skills to do so with them. Please help realize their dreams for a better life by donating.
