My Students

In my self-contained special needs classroom, we begin the morning by singing, "It's a great day, I'm thankful to be with you!" I love to serve this population because I know that each child is valuable and capable. It is my job to nurture their gifts and to show them that they are loved. In doing so, they will achieve great things! I work at a Title 1 public school and the students I serve are a diverse bunch of kids who have been diagnosed with autism, Down syndrome, or an intellectual disability which requires a self-contained class to better serve their needs. While there may be significant challenges, there's nothing as rewarding as the connections we make, the learning gains that our kids achieve, and having fun along the way!

My Project

When I was asked what room I wanted to be in this year, I specifically picked my current room because I had the vision to turn a large storage closet into a sensory room for my students. My group is primarily made up of children who have autism and they often have sensory processing difficulties. Many of my students are either over-sensitive or under-sensitive to sensory input, and as a result we try to incorporate sensory experiences within our teaching. However, they would greatly benefit from having a dedicated space to have regularly scheduled and structured sensory experiences, without additional demands placed. This area is perfect for scheduling regular time throughout the day to provide them with a sensory diet because it is within our classroom and completely safe. We have a few furniture pieces that we plan to use in this former storage closet, but we need your help to fill in the rest! By providing us with the tools we need to serve our students, you are helping them to meet their sensory needs in appropriate ways, which will minimize problem behaviors and allow them to better focus during learning activities.
