Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My class is full of 26 kids who love to learn and want to be at school. They are creative, global-thinkers, inquirers, reflective, caring ... you name it!
It is not uncommon to see my students clapping for one another's successes, cheering each other on, playing with Pokemon at recess or racing each other across the soccer field during brain breaks!
They really are friends.
My kids work hard. A lot of students are below grade level, but that doesn’t stop these students from giving their 100%. They believe in themselves and want to be the best they can be. However, we are slowly running out of headphones which are a critical tool for our continued learning.
My Project
My students use the Chromebooks in our classroom every day to demonstrate their mastery of skills we are learning in class or to practice various skills they need to work on independently. Students watch videos that deliver further instruction in phonics and phonemic awareness. These programs help students who are performing below grade level either due to need for further instruction or because they are English Language Learners. They watch videos I assign and record videos of themselves or voice recordings to demonstrate their knowledge, as well.
Our headphones have been breaking one by one over the past few years.
Although we ask students to bring a pair with them to school on the supply list, most students don't have headphones and I no longer have a class set. The headphones I have were donated and break easily, despite our efforts to keep them in good condition due to their poor quality. At this point, I have less than 10 pairs of headphones working, and every day it seems a new pair gets tossed to the trash.
Without headphones, my students' computers would be playing different videos at different times, creating a cacophony of sounds in the middle of the class which causes huge distractions to other students trying to work. Unfortunately, we live in a lower income community, so providing students with headphones for classwork becomes a problem for each individual classroom.
You can help my students continue to grow by providing them with headphones to use during class time that are better quality and more reliable. These headphones should be able to be used for multiple years.
