I am a first year first grade teacher in Chicago's Cabrini Green neighborhood. My students live in the projects across the street from the school, and they all receive free breakfast and lunch at school. These children do not have easy lives. They do not always have stability and security at home, so I try to provide that for them in our classroom. I have worked hard this year to take the eighteen anxious, angry children that walked into my room and turn them into a community of learners. My classroom has become a safe, welcoming place where the students are comfortable enough to take risks and learn. I have guided, challenged, and encouraged my first graders to become readers. Many of them are at the point now where they are excited to pick up a book and know that they can read the words inside. The problem is, with my extremely small classroom library, I have a very limited number of books that are on their level. I would love to be able to provide my students with a library full of books that they can read on their own. This would be the best gift anyone could give them. Not only would these books provide wonderful educational opportunities, but they would give my children a boost of confidence and make them lifelong readers. I am starting by asking for a variety of easy to read non-fiction books, including science topics and biographies. Thank you in advance for your generous donation.
