This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are amazing. They come to school prepared to learn and try their best to achieve our high expectations every day. Our school is located in a low-income area with most students receiving free or reduced-price lunch.
Engagement is key for my students and I want them to be engaged in their learning so they stay in school and succeed!
I want my students to learn and be successful and have fun at the same time.
I focus on the potential and growth of the children in my room. That growth is measured in student joy and love for learning, their engagement in classroom activities, and their desire to share their learning at home!
My Project
Toon books provide comics that can encourage early readers to practice their newly acquired skills. My first graders are just beginning to enjoy the written word and comics are a great way to keep it simple, yet fun and exciting.
Many of my students do not have books at home so using these comics as reading homework can engage family participation.
Most parents grew up reading comics and will find their child's reading homework more appealing. Repeated reading will allow students to focus on the illustrations and connect the pictures to the authors purpose for writing.
As they become familiar with the reading I will assign writing that produces opportunities for the students to create their own comics. Your donation to provide my students with Toon books will help them develop their reading fluency with a genre they have not yet discovered.
