Tunes at a Touch

My students need an iPod touch for music playing, picture taking, and voice recording along with a protective case.

My Students

Aloha from na keiki o Hawai'i. My preschool special education class provides early intervention services to qualifying special needs children with a range of disabling conditions, ages 3 to 5 years. Most of my students struggle to speak and be understood, and several have fine motor challenges as well. My school is located in a predominantly rural, low-income neighborhood with a considerable portion of the children of Hawaiian and/or Pacific Island ancestry.

Our classroom cheer sums it up: "You too, we too, we all love preschool!" We are a group of actively involved adults-teacher, aide, and therapists, and children working together in our hands-on learning environment.

My Project

When I was a kid, my teachers had record players but I don't recall hearing music played very often. When I started teaching my little ones, I realized how critical music is to their learning, their play and their speech, language and cognitive development. So I bought a CD player --What's that? --and would DJ discs throughout the day to play this tune for this activity and those tunes for another. Then along came the iPod, and I could customize a playlist and easily find the perfect song for the occasion. Unfortunately after a decade plus of sing alongs and dancing, I can't even update my old pink iPod nano (the one with the wide base charger) to add new tunes and revise playlists. We need to upgrade to the iPod Touch.

In addition to being our music machine, this device will also be used (instead of my personal phone) as our classroom camera, movie maker and voice recorder.

At times, my keiki will be the ones taking the pictures and making the recordings, so a sturdy protective case is a must.
