Tune Us Up: Rocking Out and Learning Physics of Sound
My students need guitar tuners to learn how to tune their guitars; with tuners they will gain valuable hands-on experience in understanding and manipulating sound waves to change frequency with the aid of technology.

it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The students at my school are bright, curious, and energetic young children in grades Pre-K through 5 (ages 4--13.) They enjoy learning new skills and are up for a challenge. Students work hard in their classes to prepare for standardized state testing and enjoy their daily break for their cluster class (45 minutes.) Classes include Physical Education, Art, Technology, Science Enrichment, Math Enrichment, and their newest addition (only in its third year): Music Class.
Students can be heard singing their music songs just for fun in the hallways, on field trips, and even at home.
They seem to absorb every song they are taught and are learning how to perform on stage (we give two seasonal concerts as well as performances for special occasions!) They are enthusiastic about every opportunity they have to play any instrument and love to be picked to help the teacher.
Our kids come from one of the poorest areas in the United States, the South Bronx. They receive breakfast as well as lunch in school, and many stay after school and/or on Saturdays for extra academic classes. They put in a lot of extra work and their test scores show it.
My Project
We introduced a guitar curriculum to our school music program last year and students were really psyched about the opportunity to learn to rock! Due to enthusiasm and constant use, the guitars often went out of tune during the school day (with kids often asking me to "fix their guitar" because it "doesn't sound good.") We only had two tuners at school last year, and one of them fell apart, so whichever students were able to get their guitar spot-tuned only received an estimation of a "good tuning" during class.
With a class set of Snark tuners, our students will be able to learn the physics of sound while tuning their guitars at the same time!
This will make student learning much more student-centered, as students will be able to receive direct feedback on their tuning attempts and adjust for immediate results. It will give them ownership and responsibility of a skilled task and they will be able to transfer this skill to other topics covered in math and science classes. The students who already own guitars will now be able to bring this skill home so they can "fix" their own guitars as well as any other guitars their family may own. This will make for much more harmonious (in tune) music-making at home!
