Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
A typical day in my classroom is loud, energetic, and fast-paced. I teach four band courses and two piano/music theory courses. My students work extremely hard to come together and develop their musical skills, both as soloists and as part of an ensemble.
My school is situated in the middle of a struggling community.
Our population is largely Hispanic, and many of our students are English Language Learners. The students at my school view many of our school organizations as a second family and support system.
My Project
These materials will be useful for years to come. The chromatic tuners will be used daily by band students to make sure that their instruments are in tune. This, combined with regular ear training, will also help them learn to tune using only their ear. By doing so, they become more aware of their own sound, as well as how their sound fits in with the rest of the band.
As the band students' abilities grow, so does the rigor of their performances.
We will be participating in a Broadway show this spring, and the music stand lights are necessary for our "pit orchestra" to see their music during the show, without distracting the audience or other performers. Of course, none of these items work without batteries, so we are requesting enough to keep these items running for quite a while.
