Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students and I have a vibrant school community in a less privileged area of town. Many of my students have a language barrier that prevents a lot of communication. However, music class is a place where they can express themselves in other ways. We sing and dance and play instruments. However there are never enough drums to go around the classroom.
Drums are one of the most accessible and least intimidating of the instruments.
Students are always enthusiastic when they get to play a drum. We use them for accompanying songs, but more importantly, letting them create their own music. Saying a rhythm and playing the same rhythm are two different skills. The cognitive connection from idea to music production is a big leap.
My Project
Rhythm and steady beat are among the first things we learn in music class. It is one of the most accessible forms of music making. We continue adding new rhythm skills each year as they come to music class.
My students' faces light up when they get to put new skills to work on an actual instrument.
Learning about music and getting to DO music are very different experiences.
Having drums for the students to play will expand the learning experience for all the children in the school as they come to music class and play on high quality drums.
