This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I currently work in a school servicing students with autism and intellectual disabilities in grades 6-12. My students are also English Language Learners and have an abundance of assets, joy for life, and a love for learning. Besides the core subjects, like reading, writing, and math, students also receive vocational training to learn important job skills to succeed in the workplace after graduation.
Our school's culinary arts program, the Learning Cafe, is where students learn how to follow recipes to make delicious and nutritious meals.
They learn cash handling practices, health and hygiene, and how to provide legendary customer service. However, we desperately need a working refrigerator to store the perishable ingredients we use daily cooking.
More than half of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
