I teach 5th grade mathematics to approximately 100 students each year at a Title 1 Campus which has 50% of the student population identified as low socio-economic students and qualify for free or reduced lunches. My classes also include special needs students, ESL (English as a Second Learner) students, and Bilingual students. I use a Word Wall and many different activities to reinforce essential vocabulary terms. This would be invaluable to our ESL and special needs populations.

Many of my students have limited background experiences and resources. Our school has an academic standard the creates pride and accelerates student achievement within the learning community. Math is an essential skill which leads to lifelong success in ways too numerous to list.

My students love seeing their photos on my website, school newscast, and printed. I truly believe that taking their digital photos of vocabulary terms will add "fuel" to their excitement of learning. How cool would it be to see a Word Wall with relevant pictures of terms that students have chosen.

I scaffold students learning by building a strong foundation in mathematics. Putting them behind the camera will empower them in their learning experiences. To the struggling student with special learning needs, or the poverty-stricken student providing this alternative way of education could be the key to his/her success in enjoying life long success in mathematical achievement.
