Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The first amendment protects freedom of the press but it doesn't ensure that young people will understand exactly what is being protected and why. Journalism is a pillar that holds up our society and protects it from being undermined and taken advantage of. In this day and age of fake news, social media and 24 hour news, being up-to date, honest and ethical is paramount.
I have the title of teacher but I consider myself more of an adviser with the goal of letting them take ownership of informing not only themselves but their peers as well.
Helping them understand that what they do in my classroom will not only help themselves but everyone that comes across their work.
I teach at a lower-middle income school that has a high proportion of foreign-born students, with 58 percent students born outside of the United States. Over 80 percent of the student population are deemed to be economically disadvantaged.
That being said, I've had students in the last couple years win Silver Knight awards for Journalism and Digital Media. I've had editors go on to prestigious universities such as Harvard and Brown.
My Project
The ability to absorb light is what allows our eyes to see. Without light we would literally be in the dark so being able to provide my television production students some advanced lighting options would make their work shine
Journalism is under attack and we need to search for the truth at all times.
I tell my students that find every angle and tell every story. It's amazing what proper lighting can achieve when it comes to finding out the truth.
With equipment such as the Sunpak Tripod and the Savage LED Portrait Kit - continuous light kit, my students will no longer have to search for proper place and lighting for their reports. I can set up a proper studio with the Canon VIXIA HF R800 that will be ready for them as soon as they need it.
