This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My two 6th grade classrooms loves games. They are all eager to learn but their attention wanes quickly. I keep their focus through the use of games and instill game-based learning and gamification into our daily activities.
I am a monolingual 6th grade Math and Science teacher, teaching two classrooms where 96% of the students have free or reduced lunch and 92% are bilingual with many having Spanish as their first language.
We're a high needs school in a high needs community trying to make do with the few resources we have. I am lucky this year to have a low number of students (25 in one class and 22 in the other with 6 more Push-In for Science). However, I feel like I am constantly struggling to meet the needs of all of my students. I am noticing that many lose focus easily and are not participating as much as I would like
My Project
I am asking for two Neurosky Mindwave headsets. These brain-reading headsets process EEG outputs. The students will play games (such as ThrowTrucks) that will require them to be calm and to focus in order to become one with the items that they will need to move. The students will become real life Yodas in the classroom. In order for the items to move in the games that use the headsets, the students will need to learn strategies to remain calm and focused.
I want my students to learn how to calm themselves and focus in the classroom and in life.
I intend to use this with all of my students in my game-based learning lessons, but primarily with my students that are ADD and ADHD. They will use the headsets to move object with just the focus of their minds and translate the strategies that they come up with in every day activities.
