This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Nothing beats the excitement that comes from standing over a laboratory bench watching science come to life before your very eyes. Most students grow to love science's hands on nature and real life applicability. My students however, don't get the opportunity to engage in such engaging activities.

The majority of my students live well below the poverty line in South Los Angeles.

Many of them live in overcrowded apartments nestled between gang infested street corners and LA's infamous skid row. It is not uncommon for my students to take 2-3 buses through LA's most dangerous neighborhoods just to get to school. Our school is an oasis in the harsh South LA landscape. Located in Downtown LA, our high school currently boasts the third highest ranking among LAUSD public schools. Last year, 99% of our senior class graduated and 92% went to accredited 4 year colleges or universities. Most recently, our school won the California Charter School of the Year Award. Our kids are fighters. Despite their unfortunate circumstances, my students come to school every day ready to learn and improve. They know that through hard work and dedication, they can create a better life for themselves. I am positive that given the right opportunities, my students can succeed at the highest level.

My Project

My students are extremely curious. They love coming to Biology class and learning about how the world around them works. Unfortunately, my school's lack of glassware makes it very difficult to satiate my students' desires for critical thinking and scientific analysis. With our current budget and allotment of resources, I can not assign college level laboratory activities that will prepare them for the types of labs they will be required to complete in college. The donated storage space and glassware will allow my students to complete the same college level labs that students at other more privileged schools complete. These materials will open a vast range of laboratories that will engage my students and allow them to critically think about advanced topics like Biochemistry, Anatomy, and Physiology. The materials will also allow me to teach advanced experimental techniques and design that will my most scientifically inclined students be more prepared for their future science class

My students are roses growing from concrete.

They have used what limited resources they have available to develop into great thinkers, students, and most importantly, people. However, even the strongest individuals occasionally need help. Your donations will greatly support my students' education by providing them the materials they need to best prepare for college. Your donation will unlock even more doors for my students and provide them opportunities that they never thought imaginable.
