it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students love engaging activities that get their bodies moving and their minds thinking. I have quickly noticed in my first year of teaching that behavioral problems decrease when students are out of their seats and engaging in the material. My students are constantly asking me to incorporate different activities into our lessons that are interesting and meaningful to them. They have already shown a great interest in music and the arts. They have the interest to see how art and music and core subjects integrate with each other. Discovery is one of the most exciting ways to learn!
My Project
By partnering with the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) and Trout Unlimited, I will give my students, and the other 4th grade classes in my school, the ability to raise rainbow trout in our classroom that will be released into a local Utah waterway.
This is an exciting project that I have undertaken and the materials for this project would allow me to give my students hands-on Science and Social Studies experiences for multiple months throughout the year.
Additionally, these materials can and will be reused yearly to provide these unique learning experiences for many more students in the future.
Fourth grade Social Studies and Science curriculum focuses heavily on Utah geography and biology. By raising rainbow trout, I can give my students numerous opportunities to engage with many core science standards and objectives. Some of these science standards include:
- Describing the common plants and animals found in Utah environments and how these organisms have adapted to the environment in which they live.
- Observing and recording the behavior of Utah animals.
- Describing the physical characteristics of Utah's wetlands, forests, and deserts.
These science standards easily integrate with 4th grade Social Studies standards allowing me to create and use engaging and memorable lessons for all the 4th graders in our school to participate in. In addition to core state standards, raising trout in the classroom allows me to teach students important conservation practices that can help benefit Utah's waterways and environment.
