This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our band represents the students, parents, and community of a small town. Many of my students have parents who were in this band when it was one of the finest in the state over a decade ago. I want to work with my students to rebuild our band into something that will once again be a source of pride for our community.
For many of my students, the purchase of a musical instrument represents a significant investment of five percent of their annual household income or more.
Our school is a small rural high school with 600 students in grades 9 through 12. Over half of our students receive free and reduced breakfast and lunch. We do not have a lot of resources in our band program, but my students are willing to work hard for what they have.
My Project
My student is a bright and talented young man who receives little support from home for his music studies. Recently at a football game, a set of drums fell on top of his trombone and crushed his instrument beyond repair. His parents cannot afford to buy or rent another instrument, so I am hoping someone will donate this trombone so that this young man may continue to develop his musical abilities and potentially earn a music scholarship to go to college and change his life for the better. This young man has amazing talent, but is in an unfortunate situation that is no fault of his own. This trombone could be a potentially life-changing instrument for him.
