My Students

Was your high school math class set-up where the teacher just stood in the front of the room? I am trying to change that picture. Through the use of hands-on, engaging projects, I am attempting to make my classroom more student-centered instead of always teacher-centered.

My geometry students range from sophomores to seniors in high school geometry.

Our school has nearly 1,600 students. They are taking a college preparatory class. Geometry is sandwiched between Algebra I and Algebra II at my school. To prepare them for the real-world with the help of this grant, my students will work and present mathematical projects.

My Project

My goal as a high school math teacher is to make my classroom more student and project centered throughout the learning process. This project will be a good start in that direction for my geometry classes.

I will use the materials provided through this grant to develop a student-centered project in which students find the heights of various tall objects around their neighborhood outside of class time.

This project will provide an excellent way to answer the question, “When are we ever going to use this?”

Students take home the supplies and will use trigonometry project to find the height of the objects, like trees, buildings, and other tall objects in their community. They will measure out 25 feet from the given object with the provided tape measures. Next, they will then use the digital level with angle finder to find the angle from the ground to object. With those two measurements, students will use a scientific calculator and trigonometry to find the height of any given object. Project packets will include a calculations page, drawings, and an extension problem. To cut down on the cost, I will split up the day in which the students do the project.

I will share the materials with the other geometry teachers at my school so more students can experience the project. The ultimate goal is to have students become critical thinkers and problem solvers.
