This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a teacher in a Title I school, my students are faced with problems both in school and out of school. Many of my students leave school to an empty house or to help their parents either cook or take care of a sibling at home. I teach three regular language arts classes, many of whom still struggle to read and need support in order to be successful.

Despite the obstacles they face outside of school, they always arrive to class eager and thirsty for knowledge.

Every day I remind them that they are loved. I am not only a teacher, but a listening ear and someone who cares. I make sure my students leave every day remembering this. I cannot control their home experiences, but I can control the experiences they have within my classroom.

I teach at a school where 80% of the students receive free or reduced price lunch. I teach at a school where many students come from broken homes and shared responsibilities far beyond their years. I teach at a school where I know I can make a difference in the lives of many.

My Project

Motivating students to learn and participate is a daily challenge and never-ending battle of wits. Some days it's smooth sailing, and other days, it's hard to get any teaching due to classroom misbehavior. Many times, having a reward system in place helps to motivate and stimulate good habits and behaviors in students.

Students are more productive because it creates a feeling of pride and achievement, especially for those students who lack more intrinsic motivators.

It increases interest and raises participation in everyday classroom tasks, responsibilities and learning. This make students happy and helps to boost self-esteem, which creates a better learning environment for all involved. It also is a great strategy to help build character and teach appropriate classroom behaviors.

I have found using rewards improves outcomes for students by endorsing their efforts. The ideas are in place but I lack the items to put the plan into action. I would like to put a more robust system in place where students can "unlock" greater prizes, thereby having them earn bigger and better rewards. This will not only teach them delayed gratification, but also give them the feeling of earning and saving, like an employee who gets paid a salary. I need to have prizes that will generate buzz and healthy competition. I can only do this by getting popular items and creating a tiered reward system. Rewards help students work toward their goals, which gradually is the hope that the students will work with less rewards as they develop work ethic and their own sense of responsibility for their behavior.
