Treasure Baskets & Early Literacy

My students need "Treasure Baskets" to create early literacy projects with their little ones!

My Students

Students range from 14-18 and many are learning English as a second language. Located in the sunny mission, everyday teen moms and babies come to school. Young women can start at our school while they are expecting and continue after their baby is born. Students continue with their academic education as well as learn parenting skills, healthy baby strategies and useful community resources (including jobs and money management).

Until 2014, there was no library at our school.

Our library includes books and electronic resources for academics & a makerspace as well as books for little ones & teen pleasure reading.

Our students have very busy lives filled with school, homework, jobs and family responsibilities of caring full-time for an infant! When they come to school, they are eager to learn both academic work, parenting skills and work related skills.

My Project

Our teen moms visit our school library & find books for their classes, books to read for enjoyment AND books to read to their little ones.

As they learn about early literacy, they will discuss & choose everyday household items (Like plastic measuring cups) for Treasure Baskets!

They will choose items that are safe & fun for children 0-5 can play with, talk about & enjoy!

This new resource in the school library will give young moms a chance to work together & talk about safety & literacy for children. Each item in the Treasure Basket can lead to a song, a fun rhyme & doing an activity just like "MOM".
