Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am an Itinerant Teacher for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing for all of OKCPS. Most people are unfamiliar with this position. So what is my role in the schools? I focus on 3 major things; accessibility, language development, and self-advocacy. My students are all across the district.
I am serving over 30 students in 18 different school sites.
But ask me tomorrow and the number has probably changed, there is always a new school or student being added (which I love). I work with students who are being served for a hearing loss. Most of my students use spoken language to express themselves and are in the general educational setting. They are fully capable just like anyone else but sometimes require accommodations to level the playing field.
My time with my students are full of practicing communication strategies, following directions, learning self advocacy skills, reading audiograms, setting future goals, and so much more.
My Project
The Professional Academy would allow me to connect with professionals in my field across the world. I will have unlimited access to recorded webinars, monthly meet ups, and online training courses.
These courses will allow me to grow in many areas such as:
-scheduling students and working with classroom teachers
- how to make all classrooms accessible to D/HH students
-assistive technology
-interpreting the audiogram meaningfully to students and families
-helping students develop their self-identity
This is my first year and I am the only Itinerant teacher for my district, I want to grow as a teacher for my students.
