My students are bold and creative middle schoolers that are interested in growing, learning, and experiencing everything they can. My experience with them every day breaks the mold of what people would expect in a middle school classroom. Their cooperation, maturity, and leadership skills are noteworthy, and I'm proud.
If my students are given an opportunity, they will take full advantage of it.
This is what defines my students and the other 800+ students that my school serves. What my students and my school lacks in resources, we make up for in resourcefulness. Our mission is to move 100% of our kids to the college of their choice, so that they can choose the life path that suits them.
My Project
My students are ready to become experts on the Great Depression, but they need help to get there. Due to homelessness, some of my students will miss out on extracurricular chances to learn about the Great Depression. Some are new to our community and their families have not been able to secure stable housing, some live in shelters and others bounce around with family members. Regardless of their circumstance, there is one thing that is common for all of them, gaining access to enrichment opportunities is significantly more challenging. The traveling libraries will give my homeless students without access to internet an additional option to learn about the Great Depression outside of the classroom through engaging fiction and nonfiction texts.
All children, no matter their circumstances, deserve an opportunity to learn in a way that makes sense to them.
For some of my students that this project would benefit, independent reading is a challenge, so the audio recordings of "Bud Not Buddy" and "Out of the Dust" and Spanish versions of the books are resources that will ensure that every one of my students gets what they need.
