Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are very hard on themselves, but use my classroom to try several forms of art to find themselves and new ways to problem solve. Several students come in intimidated about their skills or have a lot of emotional needs that make them feel insecure. As time progresses, several of my students that have accomplished a technique or were able to let out their burdens on paper, have left my room smiling with pride or relief. Most of these kids have way more burdens on their shoulders and asked that they grow up a little too fast to help the family. My room is a place to process, to learn, to not worry, to be a kid still. Some of these burdens are financial and with the Coronavirus taking over, some of these kids have to help their families even more than before. I want to make my classroom a place with endless possibilities and not worry about some basic supplies. Nervous that we will have to start the year in our homes or be asked to return there, I want to have supplies for them at school and home so we don't miss a beat.

My Project

My students were unable to retrieve their supplies from the classroom when we went into shelter in place. Our classroom wouldn't have been able to make enough supply packs for them anyways. I'm hoping that the new year will be better and heading back to what was normal. I fear that we might end up in this situation again and I want to be able to make a traveling art kit for these students and be able to drop them off or make a pick up time in the parking lot. Most of these kids dont have basic supplies at home or not allowed to use what is at home or cannot afford them. Any and all supplies would be wonderful in the room but I'm focused on meeting each students needs in case for a further state of emergency. Especially drawing and journaling in a Sketch book. Drawing and journaling is a great way to practice their skills but also creatively cope with surrounding stressors.
