My Students

My students hail from a small town in Southern Mississippi. The media center is in a fully inclusive public elementary school that educates approximately 600 students from a variety of diverse backgrounds. More than fifty percent of our students come from low-income homes. They range in age from five to ten years old and are in kindergarten through third grade.

The students are eager to read and ready to learn new things.

The library supports all curriculum standards in all areas. All classes visit the media center for an hour every week, except so far this year, when I go to classrooms each week.

My Project

This year has been a challenge for STEM (science, technology, engineering and math)! I would like to give my students the opportunity for hands-on learning. To do so, I need enough materials for each student to use at their desk. I also need items that can be cleaned for the next use. I have raided my sons Legos for additional supplies, and now could really use some Duplos, which are larger Legos for younger students. These Duplo people, animals and bricks will be used to create challenges for even the youngest students. We will read stories about creatures, and then encourage students to create a home for them, or design a new animal!

Dominos will be another fun learning activity that students can do at their desk.
