My Students
I am a school social worker on the south side of Indianapolis. Over the past decade, our district has gone from feeling like a small town where multiple generations live and work to an international community.
Due to a combination of factors, we now have the highest population of refugee immigrants in the state of Indiana.
Our largest population comes from Myanmar. We also have groups from Syria, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and other areas.
Within our American born population, we have a wide variety of socioeconomic diversity as well.
Our students are engaged in education and take school very seriously. However, our families may struggle to provide for basic needs or may not know where to seek resources. There is often a language barrier, and our schools are constantly working to improve our communication in multiple languages. This adds a unique dynamic on top of the increasingly common challenges faced by many schools in terms of trauma, poverty, and learning challenges. We also have two classrooms for moderately to severe cognitive challenges. With all of these issues, there is a need for a great deal of resources.
My Project
Some of our students and their families have experienced significant trauma in their lives. The ongoing effects of these events can make it very difficult for students to do their best in the classrooms.
Learning ways to calm down helps, but different kids need different 'tools' to be successful.
These items will allow our students to have choices in managing their feelings. We will be able to put together personalized 'tool kits' for our students who have the most need.
With these options, our students will learn that school is a safe place to learn, not only academics, but social and emotional skills as well.
