Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

At our school of Expeditionary Learning, we come together to explore, question and create in order to do better work and be better people than we ever thought possible. In a nutshell, Expeditionary Learning provides students with an interdisciplinary education connected to character and community.

An integral component of a student’s education at our school is through “Learning Expeditions”, in-depth studies of a compelling topic tied to literacy standards.

These Learning Expeditions go hand in hand with fieldwork experiences within our local community to further investigate and explore real-world connections.

We think our third-grade students are extraordinary minds working to solve these real-world problems. With 87% minority students, 70% of the students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, new immigrants from Mexico, Syrian refugees, students in transitional housing, and a multitude of languages spoken, our students bring their insight and diverse background experiences to the problem-solving table.

However, these diverse backgrounds mean that sometimes our students have other needs that need to be met before they are ready to learn.

My Project

Each one of these resources would play a purposeful role in creating a welcoming environment where ALL students have the tools to learn. For example, many of our students who have experienced trauma need safe spaces that they have control over. In my classroom, this often looks like specific seating and areas for each student. The wobble chairs, crazy creeks, bike pedals and seat cushions provide this specific space for each student to move and have control. Students choose what they need to learn best. By having more than one of these movement and seating resources in my room, having different learning needs becomes normalized. The fidgets and weighted blankets becomes normed in the classroom. These fidgets help all of my students express their anxiety, anger, and other emotions in a healthy way without taking away others learning. All students realize that they have the tools to succeed while not being stigmatized.

The classroom environment plays a pivotal role in how a child accesses their education.

In addition to the tools in my classroom, my physical classroom must also reflect a calm welcoming environment. Research shows that softer lighting can be calming for students who have experienced with trauma. The harsh and sometimes flickering florescent lighting of the school can trigger an already sensitive nervous system. The sturdy string of lights would help create a calming presence. Other tools such as a sound machine and a diffuser also help create a soothing environment.

Students who have experienced trauma also need to be reminded that they are a part of a classroom family. Pictures help my students with trauma know that they are an important part of our crew. Each and every tool reminds these students that they are welcome and they belong.
