Trauma-Informed Classroom for Immigrant and Refugee Students
My students need tools to process trauma, such as soft pillows and therapy putty.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are some of the most resilient people I know. They come from many different countries and speak over 40 different languages. They are just like other middle school students, except for the fact that they are getting used to living in the US, and they are learning English for the first time in a Newcomer School.
My students need a warm, caring school environment, as they process trauma they have experienced, and transition to a new culture and language.
My Project
My students struggle to learn English and other content on a daily basis because they are still re-living past experiences. In our school, we attempt to help the students think about their feelings through relationship circles and other restorative processes, so that they can get to the business of learning. We use sensory tools, calm lighting and aromas, flexible seating, and other methods that help students to feel safe and secure. We care about the whole child because we realize that students can’t compartmentalize their lives. As our students learn English, they also learn how to process emotions and relationships.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
