My Students
The first time you see pictures of deformed sea creatures due to plastics in our oceans, you will never forget it.
My students are enthusiastic fifth graders in a highly capable program.
They are natural leaders and feel passionately about protecting their environment. This year they took on the challenge of looking at trash pollution in our local marine environment.
They've been researching what kind of trash is affecting the Puget Sound and its impact on the local marine animals. They have made posters and have been shocked by the effects of trash on our ecosystem.
My Project
My students would like to educate other students in our school about trash and how they too can protect our local habitat. After showing their posters in the primary classrooms, they will leave environmental books for each classroom.
Students will be asking parents and teachers to make a commitment to only use reusable bags when shopping. I am also requesting a set of large crochet hooks so students can make their own crocheted tote bags made out of plastic grocery bags.
Students will also be making their own recycled book boxes made from jewelry or gift boxes left over from the holidays. The inside of these boxes will hold personal treasures like photos, poems and small keepsakes.
This project will teach about trash pollution and its effects, encourage a whole community to protect their local marine habitat, emphasize that concept of re-purposing trash, and provide much needed reading materials in our primary classrooms.
