My Project
Students in my classes come from various cultural and linguistic backgrounds. From Ghana to El Salvador, newcomers to our country often encounter seemingly insurmountable language barriers when mainstreamed in general education classes. As an English Learner teacher, I see the frustration on my students faces everyday.
“You don’t know how hard it is not to understand, Miss”, a girl told me the other day.
But I do know, as I was once a language learners myself! Proficiency in more than a language is a sign of strength not a mark of disability. And proficiency in English, together with the linguistic ability in their own languages, will make the most vulnerable of children in our community successful.
Pocket Talk are small translation devices that allow student to read a transcript of spoken English in their own language or in English, creating closed captions or subtitles for every lecture they attend during their school day. Furthermore, the devices will allow to communicate verbally with their teachers, allowing often shy and withdraw students to advocate for themselves. This is a huge step towards becoming self directed and independent learners.
Self advocacy and increased English proficiency are two of the many advantages that PocketTalk will bring to my students. This project will help our school leveling the playfield and provide our students with the right tools to be successful in high school and beyond.
