My Project

A new student moved to Jefferson City this year and we are lucky enough to have him at our school, Pioneer Trail. He speaks Spanish and lives in a primarily Spanish speaking home. This has made instruction and learning quite difficult for this student and his teacher this year. We recently purchased sets of language translating earbuds that will automatically translate the content a teacher is teaching in English into the student’s native language for deeper understanding and learning. In order to make this project as successful as it can be, we now need two tablets to run the earbuds' translation app on. Our hope is by doing so, the student will still be exposed to the English language, but will immediately receive instruction in a more understood manner.

By providing ELL students with these earbuds and tablets during the day, they are better able to access the content knowledge provided in their classrooms and more easily engage with their classmates.

They are also able to participate in discussions and ask the teacher questions, as the earbuds and app work together to provide two-way translation for conversations. If approved, this project will be able to improve both academic and social successes for our ELL students. In addition to direct student access to these devices, these tools could also be used during parent-teacher conferences and/or IEP meetings with parents who are not native English speakers. This would then promote positive relationships and clear communication with students’ families.
