Translating Math!!!

My students need an iPad to help students displaced from Hurricane Maria learn English and communicate in math.

My Students

My students consist of three 5th grade math classes. They are enthusiastic and eager to learn. My students are part of a rural community in central Florida of limited resources. Our school has 65% of our students receiving free or reduced-price lunch.

As a teacher, I strive to help students shine in all aspects of learning.

My goal is to have each student embrace math learning and overcome any challenges they face. In my classroom, I want every student to succeed and be a confident critical thinker.

My Project

Since Puerto Rico was devastated by Hurricane Maria, we have had many students displaced from Hurricane Maria enroll at our school. As a fifth grade math teacher, I am tasked with getting students ready for middle school math. Students displaced from Puerto Rico are facing language challenges as they try to learn English as well as math skills. Communication with Spanish speaking students from Puerto Rico requires the use of translation devices otherwise students are unable to understand the math content. With the help of an iPad, my students will have the opportunity to use various apps for english language learners, as well as translating apps to be able to understand content in their home language, communicate with peers and continue their learning.

I would like my students to be able to use the iPad as a tool to bridge the language barrier!

Using the iPad in the classroom will give the new students the ability to communicate as well as have the opportunity to learn English, math skills, and increase academic vocabulary.
