Transitional Kindergarteners Need Bilingual Books for Lending Library!
Help me give my students a collection of bilingual books about social-emotional topics, careers, and classic tales, so that they can check out and share these books with their families, to encourage reading together at home.
My class of urban transitional kindergarten students are learning how to get along and express their needs in a social group setting, which is especially important since many of my students did not attend preschool. In addition, they are expected to develop foundational skills in reading, writing, and math!
About 50% of my kindergarteners are English language learners, and 30% are classified as Newcomers because they entered my classroom speaking very little or no English.
Our small, Title I school is located in an urban, high-poverty neighborhood in Northern California. My transitional and traditional-aged kindergarteners are eager to learn and full of energy. Many of my families are unable to take their children to the library or to provide access to lots of books at home.
My Project
My urban transitional kindergarteners are learning to love books! A major part of their weekly homework is to look at and talk about the books in the cloth bags I send home.
I want to have more bilingual books for my students to borrow.
My class loves the set of English language social-emotional books I received in a previously funded DonorsChoose.org project, but I would like to have a Spanish and English set of these books to use as part of our classroom lending library. We do not have any career related books and the bilingual classic tales collection would also be welcomed by all.
