This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My classroom is a discovery based, common core curriculum, advanced math class.

My students are all college bound and from low income urban Los Angeles families.

They chose our school because they have high standards and expectations for themselves and they want to create better lives for themselves through education. They face many hardships and disadvantages that they overcome daily. They work hard, and really want to learn.

My Project

I write all the curriculum for my classes. Since we are shifting from CA standards and a traditional direct lesson type of learning to common core standards and the 8 standards for mathematical practice my students are expected to learn and do math in an entirely new way that is often very challenging for them. My students need a class set of graphing calculators. They really need to be able to use appropriate tools strategically and do not have the budget to afford hundred dollar calculators for their math classes. They can quickly see piecewise functions come to life and see functions transform before their eyes. Doing these lessons with paper and pencil is possible but seeing the shift happen with the push of a button is magical and will help students quickly make connections that they would not be able to make without the technology.

The students at my school, especially the students in my classes are very impressive.

They come from low income, urban families, they face a multitude of distractions to their education, like gangs, drugs, alcohol, foster care, parents in jail, homelessness and somehow, still, our students achieved a 100% graduation rate in 2014! They know that education is the way out of poverty and they work very hard. They need to be exposed to essential technology now before they go to college.
