Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Working in the diverse pockets of San Francisco, I serve students who are predominantly Latinx & African American. The complexities that these communities face on a daily bases are compounded by the inequities of the educational structures that are multiplied by the pandemic's catastrophic impact.
Schools are reverting back to old structures that never served underrepresented communities, students now more than ever need a space that reflects their identities and interests.
Unfortunately, the ones that truly hurt are students of color. Although my impact is small, I must do everything I can to support my communities.
My current ask is to bring the simplicity of safety through warm environments that will allow students to want to come to class. The pandemic has truly impacted student attendance subsequently impacting their math outcomes. The truth behind such a fact is that students don't feel welcomed and excited to be in school. To intervene and impact students' math scores is getting them to attend class and most importantly wanting to stay in class. Most of the items that are listed are meant to bring joy to the classroom by decorating (Gen Z-O-flying) the space in a way that is inviting and "chill". This project is Pt.2, the first project was so successful with students that I want to add more to the classroom! The items requested are a continuation of the theme (as shown in my profile picture). Students of color now, more than ever don't feel like they belong, especially with the low enrollment. As an educator with a complex identity schema, it is my fundamental duty to enable my students who share the same identity complexities to feel safe and welcomed.
