Transforming Students and Bacteria Through Science!

My Students

I teach in a school district that is high poverty. My AP Biology and Pre-AP Biology students really want the opportunity to experience what it's like to genetically modify an organism. This would give my amazing students the ability to apply real-world science applications. We would need to purchase a kit to conduct the experiment. This kit can be purchased through a biological supply company. My students would LOVE to be able to experience this lab and get a true understanding of how a scientist can manipulate the DNA of organisms! No donation is too small! Thank you for your support!

My students want to be engaged and this lab is a great opportunity for higher level thinking.

This lab investigation would allow them to take DNA samples from a jellyfish and insert that into bacteria. They would compare the samples using pGLO and read the results to determine whether the DNA was successfully incorporated. They will then use their knowledge to demonstrate this lab to my Pre-AP Biology classes and give them a sampling of AP Biology.

My Project

This lab will help students understand how scientists modify living organisms using the DNA from a different organism. The students will use the kit to insert jellyfish DNA into bacteria and see if the bacteria will glow. This experience would make an impact on my students by allowing them to BE the scientist.

My students can be really engaged and act like real-world scientists, improving their understanding and increasing their excitement about the sciences.

They would also be able to use the hot plates to heat the agar (bacteria food) and use the glass rods to stir the agar to make sure it's dissolved properly.

The hot plates and glass rods will also be used for other labs and by other science teachers for labs.
