Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach students ages 10-15 with a variety of health, intellectual, sensory, and physical disabilities. The majority of my students are non-native English speakers, and we are a Title I (high poverty) school which adds additional layers of challenge they must overcome daily. My students all read below grade level, and we have been working hard to set rigorous, high goals for them.
My students all desire to reach their full potential, and I know that being able to read on level or close to grade level is key to them being successful in all of their classes, as well as life.
Since my students are behind their peers, we have set goals to grow at least two grade levels in reading this year in order to "double time" their progress. I am the only resource room English and Reading teacher in my school. My personal motivation is that if I have students all three years of middle school, even if they start at a kindergarten reading level in sixth grade, they will be at a place at the end of middle school where they can go out and thrive independently in the world.
My Project
I have done one classroom transformation this year in which I turned our lesson about previewing books into a book tasting, making our room look like a restaurant and dressing like a chef, and it completely engaged students! Months later, students are asking me if we can do it again. It's because of this lesson that I know I must make all of my lessons this transformative!
I understand that student engagement leads to learning, and these materials will help me create classroom transformations that engage students.
I will use the hospital gowns and masks to have students do character "autopsies" and text "surgery," the 1920s costume items and stand-up car to transform our room for our unit on the Harlem Renaissance, the haunted house backdrop to introduce our unit on suspense, the judge wig and gavel to hold class debates, and the candy decorations to transform our room into Candyland in order to teach reading comprehension skills (theme, characters, plot, genre, and authors purpose).
