I have done one classroom transformation this year in which I turned our lesson about previewing books into a book tasting, making our room look like a restaurant and dressing like a chef, and it completely engaged students! Months later, students are asking me if we can do it again. It's because of this lesson that I know I must make all of my lessons this transformative! I understand that student engagement leads to learning, and these materials will help me create classroom transformations that engage students. I will use the hospital gowns and masks to have students do character "autopsies" and text "surgery," the 1920s costume items and stand-up car to transform our room for our unit on the Harlem Renaissance, the haunted house backdrop to introduce our unit on suspense, the judge wig and gavel to hold class debates, and the candy decorations to transform our room into Candyland in order to teach reading comprehension skills (theme, characters, plot, genre, and authors purpose).
