Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from a large underprivileged city and underfunded school system. These students are dedicated, determined, and thirst to learn.
I am in awe of the fact that despite their surroundings and varied hardships, this does not dim their enthusiasm for learning.
One hundred percent of my students receive free lunch. My students often struggle to verbalize or write about on paper what they think or feel; many are ELL students learning English; some have unique learning styles; yet they are able to express feelings and new knowledge through the arts. For some students Art is their motivation for coming to school and an area where they have success or excel, providing an important balance in their total educational experience. The arts teach our students to be more tolerant and open through multicultural and historical perspectives and through their involvement in the creative process itself. Creating this accepting environment is a goal I focus on throughout the year through various forms of literature, art, and performance.
My Project
Interactive notebooks teach students to organize and synthesize their thoughts. This year all core subject teachers are utilizing this approach as a means to create a process for students to organize their thinking as well as express themselves.
The interactive notebooks are used consistently throughout the year and work as both their own personalized textbook as well as their portfolio.
This allows us as teachers to track growth and see both their understanding and their personality develop over time.
Reflections of what students are learning will show how they are synthesizing the information learned in class. These reflections are great to show during parent-teacher conferences and even discuss during student-teacher conferences.
An interactive notebook works as a textbook for students that is theirs. Not only are they taking beneficial notes, practicing, and reflecting on material, but they are also using that information as they work on future activities. Students are going back and reviewing the prior pages repeatedly and therefore building exposure to the material each time.
Lastly students will take ownership of their learning through color and creativity. When students know, and are encouraged, to use color and illustrations in their notebooks, it makes their notes come alive. Using colored paper, markers, colored pencils, etc. makes it easier to sort information and group things together. This creativity also sparks the visual learning as well as many ESL students when they are expected to remember and apply the information at a later date. By providing these materials for the students, it allows them to focus on learning and note-taking in a more personal and engaging way while also giving voice through their reflections.
