Transforming Classrooms Into Ecotherapy Sanctuaries For Learning

My Project

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, we have been struggling to balance health and safety with the dramatic benefits of "in-person" learning. Students thrive in learning communities. Being back in the classroom, my students are able to work together actively, learn from and with each other and enjoy the magical moments of a class discussion that takes on its own momentum - an energy that can be felt in the room! We do have air purifiers in our classrooms, but because they are so loud, they often need to be turned off or very low so students can hear one another across the classroom.

Bringing plants into our classroom will have so many, research-based benefits: plants are beautiful natural air purifiers and Ecotherapy research shows that spending time in nature (or in this case, bringing nature into the spaces where students are spending so much time) can dramatically reduce anxiety and depression.

Cognitive science teaches us that feeling comfortable and calm are essential for learning.

Students will gain the invaluable opportunity to benefit from plants and to learn to take care of them. Students participating in the creation and maintenance of a lively and beautiful learning environment helps them to feel ownership and safe in the classroom.
