My students are ages six and seven. I am privileged to teach first grade in a public school serving 875 students. Because our school is in a community with a growing socioeconomic divide between the poor and wealthy, I strive daily to provide an equitable experience to all students. I have many students who are learning English as a second language.
Many students do not get enough help with reading or math at home.
Many of my students live in a high poverty area and have few resources at home to help.
My Project
My students have loved when I have transformed the room into a theme for the day! I have done a glow day where we focused on nouns and it was huge hit! My students were so engaged that day and have not forgotten about nouns.
My next transformation is a chef day!
Students will be able to dress like a chef in a restaurant for the day and work on skills we are learning in class. I want my transformations to be fun while including academics. I want to use the DVD to show video clips to help with the academic part of my transformation days. I have also transformed the seating in my classroom and I’m plan to use the wobble cushion as a new seating option for my students. Changing the classroom up for the day has a huge impact on their learning.
