Help me give my students some support tools to self-regulate in the classroom. Each year I have at least a few students who may have self-regulation issues or may have some current or past trauma they're dealing with.
I am the fortunate teacher of some really wonderful, smart, and energetic Kindergarteners! Many of them come to school ready to learn and a few bring with them some baggage that they need help dealing with. Along with help from counselors, I really want to have some additional tools for my Safe Space in the classroom to help soothe and calm my littles when they are having big feelings.
The calming tools I have selected are proven to help ease anxiety and promote a sense of calm and relaxation.
The Saffres Weighted Lap Pad and the Huggaroo Weighted Lap Animal provide a type of sensory "hug" and the Marble Maze, AppleRound Wobble Seat, and Purple Canyon Aqua Color Therapy Glasses are additional sensory tools that will be available for my students to use to help self-regulate.
The more tools we have available to help students learn self-regulation techniques, the better off these students will be in the future when they are met with stressors beyond their control. We will use these tools in addition to social-emotional stories, yoga, and deep breathing techniques. Putting all of the tools into their hands allows them choice and autonomy in learning to manage their self-care.
