My students need general sporting goods and training equipment such as slam balls, weighted vests and a base set to practice the fundamentals of baseball.
The players at our rural high school come from various socio-economic backgrounds. Players have the opportunity to try out for the team as 7th through 12th graders, so this project has the opportunity to impact several grade levels and ability groups. The players at our rural Mississippi high school have a passion for baseball unmatched by most in our area. That passion has lead to five consecutive district wins and playoff appearances.
Despite the struggles of being from a rural area and many from low to mid income families, the players have overcome many obstacles and maintain a level of professionalism.
About 82% of our students are on free and reduced lunches, and many are from broken homes.
My Project
The baseball equipment requested in the project will have a huge impact on the training process of the 7th-12th grade baseball players. The equipment will be used on a daily basis during practice and game seasons, to strengthen the stance and form of the batter, training drills, workouts, and games. Because of this excessive use of the equipment, the coaching staff struggles to provide them for all 61 players! Unfortunately, the district cannot provide much funding for the baseball program and the team and staff are left to raise funds.
