Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students work in math and coding at their own pace using software they select. This may sound dull, but with me walking around to tutor "just-in-time" and the fact that they are not chained to repeated work due to absences, progress is made, topics are learned, and smiles are frequent.
Continuation students don't flock to math, but they do enjoy coding.
The dedicated few pursue text-based programming; such as Python. Almost all students enjoy graphical coding where they see routines, algorithms if you prefer, such as "if, then" or "while" perform magic.
After they code, their determination to complete real projects in electronics and robotics increase. Completing an activity is a major accomplishment for my students. Before they begin math or coding; just starting work is their challenge.
My Project
Decades ago, I programmed in Basic, Pascal, and Paradox. I still help students; since most errors are obvious and I can adapt to other languages quickly. My teaching credentials include engineering, but my knowledge has withered. I have to fake it a bit. This is unacceptable to me. It hurts and dishonors my students.
I'm willing to work this summer, without a stipend, to take classes in programming using the graphical language Android App Inventor. As a result, next year my students will be able to master two courses that employ the sequence and rigor of the College Board's Advanced Placement - Computer Principles.
Professional development and certification have a price. Infosys has agreed to match your donation 50:50. Please help.
Continuation students can succeed.
Many will rise and truly master a topic if they knowingly start with a level playing field. They are usually beat-down before they start my math classes, but they are as good when they start coding and they know it. They want fresh starts and they need a teacher that they can respect. They need to believe that they are in a vanguard, not just trudging through a text.
Your donation helps my students become world-class, by helping make me world-class.
