This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Eager to find a service project that keeps on giving, my students have created a community service club and a signature project. Many students have gone camping at Frost Valley YMCA with me before. This time they want to help Frost Valley YMCA and raise sponsorship funds to donate to the Red Cross.
My students come from a school that receives Title I funding.
We are often short of textbooks, technology and the much needed tutoring services.
These trailblazing kids, however, find that they lack nothing but experience in making lasting ties with their community, neighbors and peers. This year Trailblazing I.T. (Involved Teens) was born out of a willingness to form those ties. Our club has partnered with Red Cross Youth.org in order to find ways to further service our community. There are many projects in the works such as volunteering at local food banks and much more.
It is with the intention of having students find that they matter and can make a difference that I have sponsored our club's formation. Without it these students would be idle, lacking real world experiences that will help build character and bring about a positive self image.
This club has answered a growing need. It answered a need for those whose idea of positive experience in school isn't just sports.
My Project
My students will not let the fact that our school receives Title I funding keep them from a willingness to pay kindness forward. Our community service club, Trailblazing I.T. (Involved Teens) has partnered with Frost Valley YMCA in order to do a service learning project. Our friends at Frost Valley YMCA, a not for profit organization has some work needed which we are able to do. We will then ask our community of family, friends and neighbors to make a donation for our work. The money we raise will be donated to the American Red Cross and their efforts to help other communities during their time of need.
Volunteering to work for Frost Valley YMCA, constructing something that future campers will enjoy and at the same time finding that the money we are paid in doing so can be donated to the American Red Cross will give these trailblazers more than community service hours.
It will teach them that public and community service can also be a way of life.
