Traditional Hula Implements for Our Elementary Hawaiian Studies Class!

My students need Hula implements, Uli Ulis, to use when learning to dance hula and perform with during our May Day Celebration!

My Students

My scholars are lively group of 5th graders that live in a rural community in Hawaii. Students living in these areas often have limited resources and experiences that are usually available students their age living in the United States.

Many of our students come from economically disadvantaged homes and have limited resources available to them for enrichment and enjoyment outside of school.

These scholars amaze me each day when they are focused on what they are learning, when they are engaged in the lessons, and when they are excited about what they will learn about next.

My Project

During our Hawaiian Studies Class, our 5th grade scholars learn about the History of the Hawaiian islands through songs, chants, poetry and learning to dance Hula. For our 5th grade scholars, this year is even more special because they will be moving on to middle school and this will be their final performance with our school. Many of our scholars have been learning Hawaiian Chants and the Hula since kindergarten. Unless they had the opportunity to learn Hula outside of school, most have never had the opportunity to use Traditional Hula Implements such as the Uli'uli (gourd hand rattle) during their Hula.

Learning the Hula and sharing this dance with our families and school community is something that we look forward to most during the school year.

By donating to this project, you will help purchase traditional Hula Implements needed for our scholars to use during the hours of practice during school and when dancing the Hula during our upcoming May Day Celebration. At this time we do not have any Hula Implements for our classes to use throughout the year. These Hula Implements will be used in multiple grades from K-5 and for years to come!
