Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Students often see subjects such as history and science as unrelated. In the community where my students live they often do not see the practical application of scientific methods in the work force. The diversity of cultures makes the natural interconnectedness of all humans an important idea.

All of my students come to my class speaking a language other than English.

Daily, Spanish, Korea, Arabic, Tagalog, Thai, Japanese, and of course English are spoken. I teach math, science, and history for new and beginning English Language Learning students in a high-need community. Students speak a variety of languages including Spanish, Japanese, Thai, Arabic, and Tagalog. 80% of students receive free or reduced lunches. Additionally, their educational experiences have been diverse. A few students attended private schools in their home countries, and other students have been out of school for a few years before entering the US public school system. My students necessarily need hands-on materials, visualizations, and extraordinary experiences to fuel their curiosity. Computer competency is necessary for my students to be able to be prepared for college.

My Project

These 25 kits come with everything needed to test mitochondrial (maternal) DNA. The test itself is simple, just rub a cotton swab on your check, package it and send it in. After scientists test the sample, students will get results that they can use to see how connected our family trees are. I will include this in our unit on DNA so that students will learn both history and science. The kit comes with a guide that gives each student an idea of the journey their DNA made to get to themselves. In addition every child will get a DVD to take home that further explains the National Geographic Genological Project.

We've seen movie stars find lost relatives on TV, now it is time to empower our students in the same way.

Please help give my students the opportunity to learn about their ancient roots in the Human family tree.
