Children learn through play. In our classroom, we have many toys. However, they're not well organized and easily accessible to the students. This shelf will provide them the opportunity to explore a greater variety of toys, making playtime more imaginative.
I am a Pre-kindergarten Special Education teacher in a Title I school.
Ninety-five percent of our students receive free lunch. The children in my classroom are 3-5 years old and forty percent of them are special education students. Because of their age and needs, the students need to be engaged in a variety of activities. Our curriculum includes center time, when the children play in different stations, allowing them to build important skills. These skills include manipulating small objects (fine motor skills) and improving their imagination.
At present, our toys are stored on two old book shelves. Boxes with toys are usually piled on top of each other. The boxes are nontransparent and the children are unable to see their contents or to access the lower bins. The new shelf has clear bins and separate compartments for each bin. Its low height will place the toys at the students' eye level. The students will be able to easily view the bins' contents and reach for the toys. This addition to our classroom will help the children to be more organized and effective during clean-up time. Being able to use all the toys will improve their skills in recognizing and sorting colors and shapes, counting, and building using Lego's and other toys.
Young children, especially students with disabilities, perform better when the classroom is well organized and they follow a routine.
This project will allow me to better cater to their needs and make optimal use of the resources that we already have.
