Toys, Lights and Music, OH MY! Motivating Materials for Speech!
Help me give my students with severe multiple impairments and cognitive impairments adapted materials to motivate them to communicate, such as musical instruments, textured books for students with visual impairments and a light board!
I am a dedicated speech-language pathologist working with students who have cognitive impairments, emotional impairments and severe multiple impairments. Many of my students use augmentative and alternative communication to express themselves, such as iPad apps, switches and PODD books.
Many of my students are from low-income homes and I want to do everything I can to help them succeed academically and communicate effectively to build connections with peers and adults!
My students are dedicated to their education and try their best in speech therapy. No matter what they may be going through, they bring the best version of themselves to speech therapy and are truly inspiring. All of the materials donated to my kids will be truly appreciated and used to work toward their communication goals.
My Project
At my school we speak AAC. My students have severe impairments but each day they get their voice heard via switches, core vocabulary, ipad apps and eye gaze technology. The more stimulating the materials, the better chances a student will be motivated to use their voice! In speech therapy I plan to use the spill-proof paint cups, paint trays and stamp pads for art projects. I also plan to use the Wikkistix, Touch and Feel book and musical instruments for my students with visual impairments. The Light Board would be incredibly motivating for all of my students. I also asked for a Dymo Label maker in order to keep track of all of the incredible communication devices and materials that my students use.
